Russian Infantry Tactics: A Strategy Built on Sacrifices

The use of small infantry unit tactics, popularized by the Wagner Group during the battle for Bakhmut, has remained a central feature of Russian assaults, as evidenced by recent operations near Pokrovsk. These tactics, involving waves of poorly trained and disposable infantry advancing incrementally under immense psychological and physical strain, aim to exhaust Ukrainian defenses and exploit gaps. While these methods achieve limited territorial gains, they come at staggering human costs and rely heavily on Russia's expendable manpower.

To counter this strategy, Ukrainian defenders have developed a comprehensive approach, combining fortified positions, overlapping fields of fire, and advanced drone surveillance to disrupt and repel successive assaults. The continued refinement of these countermeasures not only prevents Russian breakthroughs but also erodes their ability to sustain attritional offensives, highlighting the critical role of precision, coordination, and resilience in modern defensive warfare.
